Andrew Eggan Inducted into the Alpena Area Sports Hall of Fame

On May 6, the 1965-66 Alpena High School Mens’ Basketball Team was inducted into the Alpena Area Sports Hall of Fame. The team featured Andrew M. Eggan, a junior guard at Alpena High in 1967.

In his senior year, Andy averaged 10 points per game, was the team leader in assists, and was the team’s toughest defender, always assigned to guard the best player on the opposing team; no small role on a team that played full court man-to-man defense the whole game, every game, until the outcome was no longer in doubt. Andy also played football, baseball and basketball. He was on the varsity football and baseball teams as a sophomore, junior and senior, and the varsity basketball team his junior and senior years.

Bruce VanderWall, a life-long friend, who played on all of these teams with Andy, says Andy had a reputation as a “hardnosed and tough” competitor, a “tremendous leader,” who was “greatly admired and respected by his teammates and coaches” alike.

Bruce VanderWall also says, “Andy has been ever so humble about his athletic success and his part in these outstanding Alpena High teams. A trait that, as we all know, remains in Andy today. His humility remains constant in the face of an outstanding legal career and his quiet example and invaluable contributions to our individual lives, our legal and broader community, and to PSED Law. Congratulations, Andy! Enjoy this well-deserved recognition and honor.”
